Learning from an Historical Frontier as we Navigate a new Frontier: What the 18th Century Settlement of Virginia’s Backcountry Teaches 21st Century Leaders about Engagement and Connectivity
The Digital Society that has emerged over the past several years is truly a new frontier. The transformation from analog to digital, industrial to service-based economies, and the communications revolution - and now even AI revolution - that has impacted business and society in general at a monolithic level in terms of scope and multi-layered changes! However, while in some ways this Digital Society is a new frontier, those in business are not the first to navigate a new environment. History offers numerous lessons to relate to how frontiers of the past have been experienced and adapted to. Specifically, the Virginia frontier, or "backcountry," in the 1740s and 1750s offer several important lessons about how businesses may better adapt to the Digital Frontier and keep teams connected and engaged. Referencing original research on Virginia's Backcountry, Crawford will explore several key lessons that can be applied to leadership in the Digital Business Age. Crawford will provide actual, practical steps business leaders can implement to strengthen the "infrastructure" of their in-person, remote, and hybrid team arrangements, as well as provide access to unique, original designed interactive platforms businesses can use to learn more about their teams and better engage them.

Did That Just Happen?! In the Moment Responses to Interrupt Inappropriate Workplace Behavior
Everyone deserves to work in a workplace that’s free of incivility and harassment. Unfortunately, many of us still experience, observe, or hear of inappropriate employee behavior that runs counter to a positive workplace culture. These behaviors can include insensitive or rude comments, offensive jokes, negative stereotypes, gossip, insults or put-downs, ridicule, intimidation, and more. Even when we want to interrupt these behaviors, it can be tough! The situation can occur unexpectedly and often feels awkward and tense, which can cause us to freeze up or struggle with knowing the right thing to say or do in the moment. In those circumstances, it's helpful to think ahead about what you could do and have some ready responses you can use if, and when, you need them.
Being a hero isn’t always about those flashy, dramatic moments we see on TV…in the real world, it’s often about the quiet moments of bravery in the office or on a virtual call when someone effectively interrupts bad behavior to demonstrate what creating positive workplace culture is all about. This session focuses on “in the moment”, real-time responses to interrupt the negative workplace behavior and to build each attendee’s agency and confidence in these situations. Managers and employees alike can learn how and when to respond without escalation and with the skill to help foster a workplace culture that works for everyone!
This interactive session will focus on:
· Building your own awareness of how to spot when inappropriate, insensitive, or uncivil behavior may occur and building confidence and
· Learning the 4 “S” Tool for Responding in the Moment to inappropriate workplace behaviors that interrupt what’s happening, prevent escalation, limit the harm to others, and create a positive workplace culture.
· Discuss and practice scenario-based, research-backed, best practice options for responding “in the moment”.
